One of my individual tasks is to design a logo which will be paired with our branding for Dece. I started off by sketching ideas for the logo, literal and abstract. Some of the sketches can be seen on the scanned pages below.
I think the logo needs to include a very simple, recognisable shape. If we look at the logos of the main competitor brands, we can see how we need to differentiate the logo to ensure it is strong and recognisable against the others.
The logo for Quiksilver is very literal. It features a mountain and ocean wave encased in a square. Variations of the logo use this shape alongside the name Quiksilver in a variety of fonts for different versions. I think this is a very recognisable logo. The colour is very eye catching and the square provides a bold design.
The O'Neill logo is also very literal, again using an ocean wave as the shape in the design. I don't think this design is as strong as the Quiksilver logo; it is monotone and i think the actual shape of the wave is not a strong/bold enough shape for something as important as the logo for the whole brand.
The TOMS logo is very simple and i think makes for a recognisable design. Its simplicity is what makes it so recognisable; none of the competitors have a logo as simple as this and i think it is really working for them.
The Threadless logo is different to all the competitors'. It features hand drawn type and digital type, combined in a messy, organic style. I love this logo as it reflects the brand really well.
After looking at some of the competitors logos and analysing them, i have written a list of requirements that i will need to follow to create a successful logo for Dece. They are as follows:
- It must reflect the branding concept.
- It must be a recognisable, bold and memorable design.
- It must be suitable for the cause.
- Keep it simple.
