Initial Brochure Research - Jennie Clark

I will be designing a product brochure for Dece which will also include other information. Due to time constraints, i will not be designing a full brochure, but a wide range of different style pages - enough to give a realistic impression of what a full brochure would look like.

To start this task, I first wrote down a list of things which i NEED to include in the brochure, and a list of things that i COULD include. I also wrote down a list of things that i need to remember when designing a publication like this. All of this information can be seen on the diagram below - click to enlarge.

By creating this mind map i have thought of a few ideas, and i will now start sketching out some layouts for different pages. I also researched some existing catalogues for inspiration.

I first browsed through the 2011 D&AD winners in the Catalogue/Brochure and Magazine categories. Below are a few of my favourite designs.

I like the arrangement of the images in this design. The size of each image had been carefully considered and matched to the next, they fit tightly together making for a strong and tidy design. Arranging photographic images into a strong design is something that i will need to do in the design of my brochure.

In this design, the use of a simple illustration against a highly patterned image makes for a visually appealing double page spread. The contrast between the two pages created visual interest. When designing my brochure, i will be thinking of pages not individually, but as double page spreads.

The double page spreads in these brochures are very well balanced between image, description, and empty space. The contrast between the photographic images and the text on the block colour on the opposite page make a strong design. This contrast is something that i will try to recreate in my own brochure. Typographically, i really like the layouts of theses designs.
