Choosing the Brand Typeface - Jennie Clark

As the typographer of the group, it is my responsibility to choose the typeface(s) that will be used across our Dece branding. For this task, i shortlisted a range of suitable typefaces to show the group for discussion. I put them into sample format so that the group could see what they would look like.

After discussing each typeface, we finally decided on Century Gothic, with a kerning of -25 for the copy type. We decided on this for a number of reasons:

  • Simple and easy to read, yet maintains a personality
  • Tighter kerning for a neater look - clean typography to contrast with the rough textures, backgrounds and illustrations for a unique brand look.
  • Rounded letterforms to compliment the circular logo, and repetition of circular forms throughout the brochure.
  • Available in regular, bold, italic and bold italic for typographic interest.
I also chose one other typeface for a singular purpose. The typeface Cold Bold, will be used ONLY when the word 'Dece' is used with an intention to be paired with the logo. This typeface was used for the 'Ds' in the logo, therefore is a suitable typeface for type when paired with it. The change from Century Gothic will also allow the word 'Dece' to stand out when it needs to.
